A train has become the most lethal mode of transport on the new New York City subway, with a fatal crash killing at least five people and injuring at least 70 in the last two years.
The latest report from the Department of Transportation showed that the city’s five-car, high-occupancy subway system was the deadliest in the United States, with the fatal crash rate for the system up to 11 per cent over the last three years.
The accident happened on the eastbound platform at 42nd Street and Third Avenue in New York on Tuesday morning, and the cause of the crash remains unclear.
New York City Transit Chief Information Officer Richard Gaudette said it appeared that a man was trying to take off on a two-car train.
“It’s been a very, very bad morning,” he told reporters.
“A train is going to have a certain amount of speed.
It’s very, really hard to get on and off.
And the fact that it was on a platform at this height where we’re talking about, I don’t know, 40 feet, was a pretty significant number.”
It was going at a very high speed, so it’s pretty dangerous.
“The data shows that it is very rare. “
The accident is very, extremely rare,” he said.
“The data shows that it is very rare.
There have been four of these in the system in the past 10 years.
I don, I can’t really say how it’s different.
It is a very rare accident, but not by a lot.”
Gaudet said that while there were no other fatalities, the city was on high alert for other types of accidents, including one in the city last year.
In September, a man driving a pickup truck crashed into a bus in New Jersey killing five people, including two women.
It is not known how many passengers were aboard the truck.
